About Burundi Ngozi Rimiro Ruhororo Natural​

The small hill of Rimiro has always made the commune of Ruhororo happy because of its courageous and welcoming population. It is in fact, the smallest hill within the commune of Ruhororo as only 10 people inhabit the space provided by the hill. The word “Rimiro” literally translates to “where we cultivate” because the hill was allocated purely for agricultural purposes. There were many attempts from the nearby hill of Mubira to claim Rimiro as a sub-hill, but they were always unsuccessful. ​

The history of Rimiro can’t be disassociated from two rivers that run close by; Kinyankuru and Nyakagezi. All cattle owners wanted their herds to drink from the rivers but one thing kept them from doing so. The rivers and area contained myths of evil spirits called “ibisigo” which the herders believed would attack and kill their livestock so they dared not go near the two rivers. The hill of Rimiro has always been well known for producing colocases, a plant with a culture of being in harmony with all other forms of vegetation as well as producing starch, which it’s very rich and abundant in. Coffee took the hill instantly and was able to change the lives of the people there for the better. ​

About Burundi

Coffee was introduced to Burundi by Catholic Monks from the small island of Reunion in the 1930’s. Most popular variety is Bourbon, however other varieties are grown including Blue Mountain. The crop is exclusively grown by smallholders, which are grouped into farmer associations called Sogestals.

Due to the age of the trees and the variance in rainfall, there is a huge amount of fluctuation in coffee production. On average the crop is around 20,000MT. All of the the trees are Arabica, with around 70% processed as fully washed. There was an attempt to introduce Robusta in Burundi by establishing a large plantation, however this was destroyed during the times of civil was and rebellion towards the end of the 20th century.
